The gray mare let out a faint, distressful whinny, a futile attempt for help. The one month old flaxen liver chestnut colt that stood shakily beside her and pressed it's malnourished body to her's, feeling every one of it's mother's ribs and spinal bones. Surrounding them were the craving yowls of coyotes, swarmed together and trailing in circles, avidly panting, awaiting to attack. Once or twice bold individuals would take a leap forward, trying to nip at the loose skin of the horse and her foal. The mare's body was riddled with open wounds, crudely carved into her flesh that folded outward, blood streamed everywhere. Once again, with a croaky and weary voice the gray mare let out one last neigh and with that, her head collapsed onto the ground with a loud thud, emitting dust into the air. Immediately the coyote pack rushed in.

A lone mare roamed the dusty hills with her head low.She had been wandering for a while, and was growing weary. She was short and stocky, only 13 hands tall, and had a short bristled mane. Her tail was shorter than a domestics, and she had dun coloring with black legs and a creamy white belly and nose. She was obviously no domestic horse.
She looked up to the slightly cloudy sky and sighed. She needed to rest soon.Suddenly, she heard a distressed sound in the distance. It sounded like a fearful yell to her. With curiosity and apprehension, she began galloping in that direction.

the gray mare lashed out with all her effort, she flung her head and thrusted her legs, luckily for her the coyotes were not brave enough to try and dodge a kick, but quickly her energy dissolved and she began to slow down, her neck exposed for an attack. The weak foal began to call out desperately, his cry was high pitched but could barely be heard amongst the coyotes howls and without warning the foal was struck down onto his side with a jaw latched onto his flank.

The palomino stallion raised his dial, auds perked. The air was filled with the howls and scents of a pack, faintly over it could be heard the cries of another equine. Over all was the unmistakable scent of blood. The stallion snorted, clearing his nares. Whoever it was, they wouldn't last much longer. The stallion debated for a moment weither it was worth it to try to save the other. In the end, he decided for it, at very least the other equine would see the face of it's own kind before they passed to Equus's field. The stallion turned toward the fight, the sound of his hooves echoing briefly on the hard stone, what was left of his flaxen mane and tail streaming out behind him.

The gray mare was unaware of her colt's attack and she kept flicking her limbs desperately to ward off a few coyotes, but three or four collected around her head, she nipped at one but two got a hold of her neck. Her colt retaliated though and rapidly kicked his attack in the throat and chest, the coyote prevailed the kicks until the colt's hoof struck the canine's dome, the foal got to his feet shakily and he whinnied loudly, desperately.

The dun mare's ears perked at the sound of a foals cry.Was it a young one being attacked? Her female nature drove her to run faster towards the now apparent howls of wild coyotes. Her hooves pounded the against the ground as she jumped a rock and slid down the hill. The sight before her was troubling.A gray mare being torn alive by the wild dogs,as her foal struggled to get away. She ran forward with her ears pinned, ready to help the two dying horses.

Suddenly a light grey foal charged form the bushes surrounding the scene and sprinted for help, he was just as malnourished as his twin brother and his legs were weak, causing him to lean to different directions, but he was going the right direction for help towards herd. While the coyotes ate at the grey mare and tried to get a hold of the flaxen liver chestnut a few of the pack caught sight of the grey colt and bolted away from the killing scene, chasing after him into the growing fog.

The stallion heard the sounds of hoofbeats approaching, suddenly a small grey form appeared out from the building fog. The stallion almost lashed out at it, Realizing at the last moment the form was a small and weak looking foal. However, what followed the foal, while small, certianly wasn't weak. The stallion skidded to a stop, rearing up screaming a challenge to the foal's pursuers.

At that point the grey mare was dead, the coyotes had overwhelmed her, but her death was not in vain, whilst the pack was busy with the corpse her other foal, a liver chestnut foal escaped and followed his brother. He leaped through the bushes and instantly froze at the sight. His younger brother ran past a palomino stallion towards a herd while the stallion fought off a few coyotes. The colt was frozen, unsure as to what direction to go to.

As the dun mare arrived on the scene, she saw the dark colored foal standing in shock as a coyote came up fast behind him.She quickly ran to the colt and reared at the wild dog as it bared its fangs. The mare kicked out with her front legs in warning when the beast dared to get closer. When the dog refused to back down, she turned and kicked out with her hind feet, hoping to land a hit on the mange covered mongrel. Her hoof clipped his jaw, making the coyote yelp but not retreat. The dun mare carefully nudged the colt behind her and snorted as the beast drew nearer.

The dark colt finally snapped back to reality but was overwhelmed by what was going on, he saw a dun mare lashing at a coyote and a palomino stallion fighting back the pack that chased his brother, and then it hit him, his brother. Frantically he looked about, running away from the fight scene until a distinct whinnie caught his attention, he saw his grey brother over at the palomino stallion's herd, the colt was about to bolt for his brother but a coyote behind him grabbed his back leg and pulled the colt to his side, climbing on top of him, jaws wide open.
The light foal burst from the other horses, driven with anger and love for his brother, blindly he entered the fight scene and head butted the coyote on top of hi brother, but his weak body have up and he collapsed, unable to stand.

(ooc: What herd?)
The stallion lashed out again and again, finally driving the coyotes away. He snorted, auds pinned as he watched them retreat. He made sure they weren't interested in returning before turning his scarred bodsy toward the dun mare , who appeared to also have been drawn by the sounds. He nodded his dial , nickering a greeting to her.

(ooc: I thought the stallion had a few mares with him)
The two foals gathered themselves, shaken and silent from the whole ordeal and complete unaware of their mother's death. The gray foal lay his head on his younger brother's flank, they both slowly began to calm down and the liver chestnut foal began to doze away. The grey foal managed to keep awake and watched the mare and stallion and winnied, flicking his ears and tail.

The mare took deep, calming breaths as the coyotes fled. Her own mother had dealt with them in her life as well, but back then she'd had a herd to help fight. With a sigh, the dun mare turned and looked over to the two colts and stallion. She bowed her head in a show of respect to the palomino as she approached nickering a response to his greeting.
"...Salutations,good sir.A shame we could not meet on kinder grounds."she said in a soft, respectful voice.

"Likewise" the stallion replied. "Mangy little runts never do have any respect, do they?" he joked. He turned his dial toward the two foals. "Obviously, those two are hardly grown enough for thier dam to be very far. You didn't happen to see her, did you?" the stallion asked of the dun mare, though judging by the foal's conditions he had a suspicion that the coyote pack had not been directly after the pair of foals...
