Zoran frowned and walked towards her, ignoring the eagle for the moment. He nuzzled her small form with concern, eyes gleaming. "That's not going to happen", he said gently, "your mother was wrong. There's nothing wrong with you. Not all horses are like her. You'll be accepted somewhere along the road, I know it. I've seen so many herds that are friendly and welcome new members, they would love to have a new addition, especially someone like you." He smiled in a friendly way and nibbled her maneless neck gently and comfortingly. "You could always...come with me for a little while, until you settle. You don't have to do it alone. It's a big and scary world out there, but with company it's a little less so."

"R-really? T-t-they wont hate m-m-me?" Her nerves calmed a bit at the thought. She felt him nuzzling her neck. "W-w-would I? T-t-thank you." She said overjoyed at his words she nibbled him back gratefully.

Zoran snorted. "Of course they wouldn't, there are those out there who do not judge others for their pasts or how others view them." Zoran offered her a small smile. "If that were the case, I would never be given safety and security in any herd." He nudged her tenderly and grinned. "Yes, you're more than welcome in my company when the time comes. I can teach you the ways of the Wanderers and the Nomads, and then in time you can follow your own spirit, if that's what you want to do." He watched the little mare with a sort of pride in his eyes and chuckled as she felt her nibble him back in return.

She was overjoyed at his words her inner foal was dancing like mad. But Acquila flew over and landed on her horn. "Of course Jaela, I would have to come with you since you have much to learn." He turned round to Zoran "I promise I will not be a bother to you." He bowed to him. "No, but you will be a bother to me." Jaela whispered. "I heard that Jaela." He said at the little mare's words.

Zoran smiled at the exchange between the mare and the eagle. It was a father/daughter relationship, he figured, and it was amusing to watch. He nodded politely to the bird. "Well, I would not wish to leave you alone. An eagle you may be, but war manages to touch everyone, isn't that right?" He looked to Jaela and chuckled. "Don't worry, it won't be too much like being babysat, I promise. That's the whole idea; to have freedom and to roam where you please. That's what my mother used to say, anyway, wise old mare that she was."

Acquila smiled "Indeed, many of my past homes have been destroyed and many of my friends / family have been slaughtered." He said vaguely remembering his past daughters and sons. "R-really?" Jaela asked as she flicked her ears forward. She had just now noticed how much bigger the stallion was to her. Acquila flicked his wings open and stretched them before flattening them again.

Zoran snorted softly. "You have my sympathy, my friend. I've never known loss as strong as that." He looked to Jaela and nodded. "Yeah, my mother was quite the wise woman. She taught me everything I needed to know, and all my siblings before me. I miss her sometimes, but everything has its time and it was time for me to leave her side, like all the others." He seemed lost in memories for a moment. His mother had been his lifeline in more ways than one, and had taken over his lessons in the way a sire would, offering him knowledge she had taken from her own dam. Their society was a female-orientated one, and Zoran knew it. That had been many years ago now, and Zoran wasn't even sure that she still lived, but he had a feeling in his blood that she did, somewhere, living out the last of her days comfortably with her latest foal looking out for her.

Acquila turned his head to the entrance of the cave. "The snow is settling and the clouds are clearing." Jaela flicked her ears back, the sun was descending and the darkness was pouring in. Now the hunt will begin. The spine-chilling sound of distant howls were closing in. "The hunt is going to happen and it is going to be tonight." Acquila said. Both he and Jaela had been in alliance with the wolves, they look after the wolves and the wolves looked after them. But these howls were not to get help they were a warning. A warning of something BIG coming and something evil. "Jaela, do you understand what is coming?" Acquila asked he knew she understood but he had to be sure.

Zoran's ears pricked up as he heard the call of the wolves, and any normal horse would have been panicked. But he had been taught that wolves were lifelines sometimes, and their howls could help the lone horse through the darkest of times. It was just when they were driven to hunt through starvation when there was a danger. A pack as strong sounding as this wasn't a problem at all. "Something is coming?" he inquired to the eagle. "Is it the two leggeds?" Zoran looked down at Jaela and waited patiently for her answer.

Jaela nodded at Acquila's words. She had a strange 'gift' she could wonder the mountains as her spirit. She returned to her body. "Yes..." She answered Zoran's question. "...But they have their own moving mountains with raging fire following them. Headed right here." She said the panic rushed through her mind the war surely hadn't arrived here already?

Zoran looked puzzled. "Their own mountains?" These two leggeds were more advanced than the ones he had happened across- their only weapons had been bows and arrows. "They sound like a force to be reckoned with", he commented. He smelt the air and could sense the slightness of smoke heading their way which he assumed came from the fires Jaela was talking about. He looked down at her. "We might have to leave sooner than I thought", he said, somewhat sadly. He could see it was going to be hard for her, and he liked the look of this place.

Jaela's eyes widened at his words. She shook her head at the words. She heard the sickly sound of the dogs of war. She heard their paws pounding the hollow land. "The dogs of war." She whispered. The dogs are genetically modified to grow to the size of a well grown horse. They were pure evil. Many horses had been taken by them into places, light but dark places. Cramped but spacious places. Two legged beasts come and change the horses in that place. "They'll never take me...alive." She muttered to herself.

Zaph lowered his head to hers and nuzzled gently. "Hey now, calm down. We'll be able to get clear, if we hurry." He lifted his head back up and smelt the strange, exotic and definitely dangerous smell, and laid his ears back. That did not smell good... "Jaela, I'm going to need you to trust me. We'll have to leave this place, and I know it's scary but I'll be here, okay?" he said soothingly, nudging her gently.

"Ok" She whispered to Zoran. She knew the quickest way down the mountains away from the darkness. She walked to the back of the cave. She nudged the walls looking for something. She looked over to him, Acquila was still perched on her horn. "Follow me..." Her gentle voice echoed throughout the cave.

Zoran looked over his shoulder at the small mare quizzically. She was certainly old beyond her years, he thought to himself; she had to grow up quickly in terrain like this. When she called him back into the cave he went willingly, his haunches swinging back as he walked swiftly to the place where she stood. He looked at the cave wall a little blankly, not knowing what she expected to do with something that seemed like solid rock to him.
