"Yes, that's right. Though, while he looks more like him, I admit, his personality is a lot like what mine was..." She looked a bit sheepish, but there was something endearing about the interaction between the pony and the foal, and her soft expression remand, "I guess it would be a good idea to take a break from wandering, at least for a little while."
Tusk, on the other hand, was enjoying having someone to play with too much to be listening to them, and would wait for Hyrra's nip, then bounce away at the very last second with an excited squeak.

Hyrra smiled again at the colt, beginning to enjoy his company, and began to lunge forwards at him too with a small chuckle. "I miss my children sometimes", she said, looking back to the mare. "It's like...like they're in a mist and I can't get to them. I don't know where they are, and a lot of them are very mean spirited. But I had one son, black as coal, called Nebian. He had a kind heart and a noble temper, but I haven't seen him in years...he would be fully grown by now..." She looked a little saddened at the thought. That was if he had survived the avalanche in the winter of her freedom.
She flicked her tail out behind her and snorted lightly. "Please, feel free to stay. Sometimes, foals make you vulnerable."

Flare's expression shifted to one of sympathy, "Tusk is my first, and as difficult as he can be, to lose him-- I don't even want to consider that... I am truly sorry you can't get to yours... but thank you though, for allowing us to stay."
Tusk was enjoying the increasingly energetic play, but he heard at least that last part of their conversation, and he stilled a moment before bumping his forehead to Hyrra's cheek with a little nicker.

Hyrra nodded and smiled slightly at the colt's nuzzle of concern. Though he had been a clearly spirited youngster, he also knew when the time for play was over- for the moment, anyway. "Many horses died in an avalanche last winter", she said eventually, finding her feet to continue her story. "I know that the larger horses had little to no chance of escape, but I managed to, at the last instant." She looked thoughtful again. "Nebian was long gone by then, ousted by his brutish sire, so there's a chance that he survived..." She shook herself and smiled again. "I'm sorry, you don't need to hear my depressing life story. Come, I'll show you around."

Both mare and foal listened quietly, and it was Tusk who spoke before his mother could, "Sorry? Why? We were listening, right? Maybe we can look for Nebian."
"Tusk..." Flare sighed, "...He can be tactless at times, I'm sorry... but we do not mind listening." She nudged Tusk and nodded in willingness to follow the pony.

Hyrra snorted and continued on at a snappy trot. "It's no problem, honestly, and I don't think telling people of my hardships will do much good", she said over her shoulder, breaking into a gentle canter as she did so, dipping her head to the ground and inhaling the crisp smell of the sweetgrass. "Besides, I was always taught that your past is what makes you stronger, but it belongs behind you." She reached the crest of the river she had recently ran from and skidded onto her haunches, turning back to look at the mare and foal. "The territory here spans quite a stretch, despite the fact it's only me here."

Flare followed, and Tusk needed no urging, seeing as he remained few paces ahead of his mother. "That seems like a sound point of view to have been taught." And when Hyrra stopped, Flare sighed as Tusk just missed crashing into the pony, and landed on his rump. "Well, a lot of land can be a good thing..." she said through teeth again on Tusk's tail as she tugged him back to his feet.

Hyrra smiled absently. "Indeed it is, and there are barely any other horses around, so there's no real danger of any intruders or takeovers." She looked behind her and tutted playfully at Tusk, nuzzling him gently and then looking up at his mother. "This is a kind of paradise now the others are gone. There are no dangers from predators or horses alike. All there are here are the deer, the rabbits and the birds." She trotted over to the river and lowered her head to drink idly, her small ears rotating in case there were any exceptions to her words.

Tusk squeaked giddily at the nuzzle, and moved a little ways down to splash in the water, while Flare, after making a mental note of where he was, stepped up beside Hyrra, "It certainly sounds safe, and of course much better than wandering aimlessly alone..." She glanced once more at her playing foal before lowering her own head to drink.

The little mare was surprised at how content she felt in the company of the pair. She hadn't been with company for a while, and it was a curious little happiness that she felt when around them. She always got on better with young souls; it was as though they made her feel young again. She wasn't particularly old in herself, but her history was long and lengthy, and seemed almost too much to cram into a short space of years she had ben on the earth. Hyrra smiled at the colt wistfully as he lifted her head up from her drink, and looked back at the mare, her thoughts diminishing as the cool refreshment hit her stomach. "He's certainly full of life, isn't he? Is he your first foal?" she inquired politely, her tail flicking against her haunch to ward off the oncoming flies.

Lifting her head from the water to answer, she cast another glance a him, "Yes, he's my first." She paused a moment and then gave an amused snort, "Full of life is an understatement. He runs me ragged, but I wasn't much different as a filly."
Meanwhile, Tusk had found some small fish, and was splashing his little hooves up and down in the water, trying to steer them in the direction he wanted them to go.

Hyrra chuckled good naturedly as she watched the colt splash around in the water. "That time of life is so innocent, they deserve to be a little boisterous. I think I was much of the same, too. My mother was always chiding me for wandering off on my own and getting into little adventures of my own." Hyrra sighed. "It's almost sad now that I have no mate, or stallion around here to speak of. I would quite like another foal, and one that is not full of fire and hate." She sank to her knees beside the stream with a gentle huff and curled herself up in a ball, comfortable as she looked over her land. "But as I say, this place is devoid of horses most of the time. There are a few that pass through in the winter, but none that stay."

"Well..." She lowered herself to lay next to the pony, "I think we can stay with you, if you like. I'm no stallion, but I can serve as a companion, and Tusk is spirited, but not full of hate; you can be a second mother to him." Flare gave Tusk another glance, and nudged Hyrra gently with her nose.

The other mare smiled at the larger's kindness and nudged her back, looking at the colt playing in the waters downstream. "He does seem like a handful", she admitted, flicking her tail out behind her as she lay there. She lowered her head and let out a small snort. "It would be nice for some company, but I wouldn't want to bother you if you were going somewhere in particular", she said, looking up at the mare inquisitively.

"He is indeed..." It was, in fact, because of her colt in a way, that her kindness was not entirely selfless; an extra set of eyes on him would make things easier on her, after all. "We weren't going anywhere specific, really... Just looking for a new home, I guess you could say..."
