She said nothing; both had reacted similarly to her story, but bitter though she was, she understood the point of view of her former herd. In fact, the unicorn that had raised her was of a similar view point as Artemis and White Eye were, but she had made that known in a gentler and more understanding manner. Still, White Eye's words reminded her again of how glad she was to no longer be alone, and she let out a light snort of acknowledgement.

Artemis looked to the hills that now loomed over the group. "Im relatively good at climbing. So if you think its best, I can go first and test for footing.. My fore-hooves are cloven like a deers, which tends to help me for some reason." The young stallion snorted and pawed the ground gently, scraping small rocks out of the dirt. "I havent heard any predators call out for awhile, so hopefully we have a good lead on them and can take our time climbing."

White Eye nodded "yes, that would be best, thank you" she turned to look at Miasma "don't be afraid to approach, we have been bitten by too many snakes we don't think any type of poison will affect us" she shook some dust out of her mane.
just as she mentioned snakes, one began slithering silently away from Artemis' hoof....

"I still think it's best if I keep far enough to the rear... I'd rather not risk it..." She noticed the snake and let out a warning whinny. She could move in and kill it herself, but she didn't want to kill anything; she was forever tired of death.

Artemis took his first step onto the hill. As he stepped, he heard Miasma let out a warning. He looked down to see a fairly large snake making its way toward some brush. In one fluid motion of courage and fear, Artemis reared up and pounded his hoof down into the snake's head. He looked at Miasma, nodding a thank you, and then continued to slowly climb the hill. "Of all the predators out here, and out of every strange creature I've ran into before, snakes are my least favorite...."

She said nothing, and merely cast her eyes to the side; she felt a certain kinship with poisonous creatures, though her own was too much for even them. However, whatever the creature, she did not want it to die... Still, poisonous creatures killed others, and she understood survival of the fittest, but she didn't have to like it.

White Eye jumped back a bit when she heard the warning, after Artemis was done with it she approached and sniffed at the dead snake "it smells venomous, it's a good thing you saw it on time, good job" she covered the snake's head with some vegetation, the dead deserve respect, no matter the species.
She noticed Miasma's change in mood and walked towards her "Is everything all right?" she kept her distance to avoid making her feel uncomfortable

"...Yes, of course." There was no sense in voicing her opinion on the matter, and what was done was done anyway. She would just have to do things differently if a snake appeared again, or something like it. Shaking her head clear, she continued along behind them, ever alert.

Artemis noticed Miasma's mood change as well, but once the mare voiced she was alright, he decided to let it go and continue climbing. He continued carefully climbing the hill, every once in awhile small rocks slid out from under his hooves. "I wonder if we'll ever come across more like us.."

White Eye followed Artemis until they reached the top of the hill, the sun hung low on the sky, making the landscape before her easy to see, the strong wind made her braid and ornament dance.
Her nostrils flared, the wind brought new scents, but none of them was rain, she shifted one ear towards Artemis "... you never know, this place looks vast and the journey may be long"
The smoky mare's pale eyes scanned the horizon quietly for a while, her ears alert to the voices in the wind "the spirits spoke of the east, but we don't know what we may find there... They never point the way without a reason, we may all find what we are looking for there, even if we never knew we needed it" she gave a sigh and swished her tail before continuing "the ways of the spirits are not always clear, but they are wiser and much older than all of us, still... what we find there might not be pleasant... " she trotted a short distance forward and stood before them, looking at them in the eye, her voice was clear and serious "We can lead you trough the path the spirits chose, but it is up to you to follow... do you wish to continue? if you don't we can lead you trough a different path...but whatever awaits you on the east will find you sooner or later... such is the way of the spirits"

Whatever optimism had found its way into her mind had fled at those words. Ultimately, whatever destination she came to always had nothing but hardship waiting there for her, so why should it be any different this time? Just because she wasn't alone right now didn't mean she was freed from what seemed to be a destiny of a life of endless hardship. Only in death would she ever truly be free. She stopped walking. What was the point in continuing when everything would just end up the same has it had before? No. No, she couldn't think like that. Wallowing in self pity would make things worse and hold her in that one place. She couldn't handle the thought of that; she had to keep moving forward rather than staying in one place. One hoof in front of the other. She started walking again, repeating over and over in her mind 'keep going forward, one hoof in front of the other.'

Artemis listened to White Eye. "I don't know what direction to go if I were to choose. So if you are being told to head East, I say we follow that." The young stallion turned to Miasma. "Are you doing alright?"

"You asked me that before... and the answer is still the same..." As much as she liked these two, even they would be hard pressed to get her to speak her mind in cases like these. And why should she start whining, and end up burdening them with her problems. It would be best for all if she just followed along quietly, keeping her thoughts to herself unless they were ones that would aid the little group.

White Eye looked at them for a while and nodded "To the east, then" Miasma's reaction tore at her, she wanted to comfort the young mare but though it would be best not to pressure her too much, instead, she kept her own nerves in check... a strong lead mare is what they needed right now, not a soft-hearted mother figure, fear was not an option.
She turned eastwards, sighed and began to walk "Spirits know what they are doing, we may find paradise where we are going but we would never lie to you... that's why we wanted you to know what this truly meant" she scanned the horizon as best as she could, searching for a flash, a characteristic light that came from the reflection of the sun on water, a cooling drink and some grass might ease Miasma's spirit.

Artemis sighed and turned, following after White Eye. His long horns pierced the air as winds began to pick up. His stubby mane waving back and forth. He raised his nostrils toward the sky, smelling the air for predators of any sort. "We seem to be safe for now.."
