Artemis snorted and stamped his fore-leg into the dark dirt. He reared up on his haunches and battered the other stallion with his hooves, leaving gashes on the male's face and shoulder. "If you can't follow me as a leader, then you don't get my company!" The two males had banded together while traveling in a make-shift bachelor herd. However the recent influx of female scents had the two competing non-stop. Artemis bowed his head, pointing his large sharp horns at the other bachelor. "Leave! And never return!" The other stallion snorted and quickly galloped away with a half-limp due to his injuries. Artemis stood for a second, watching the bachelor go. His bachelor herd had now filtered down to him. Alone. He snorted, large nostrils flaring. He lifted his head to the sky and let out a deep call, half-whinny, half-grumble. He needed a new group to travel with. At least one other. Traveling alone in this environment would prove fatal for a young stallion like himself.

Miasma heard the other horse, and she lifted her head, bringing her attention away from the grass that was shriveling away under her hooves. She would have to be wary; if it was a 'normal' horse she would run, lest her vapors claim another life. Such was the way for her; living alone in order to minimize loss of life. Still, she was curious, and slowly advanced toward the voice she had heard.

Artemis dipped his head down, scratching it against his foreleg. All of a sudden, he heard a mare's call. It wasn't a confident call, more of a curious one. He raised his galant head, horns pointing to the sky. He let out a bellow in response and turned to view the mare. Immediately on the defense, he raised his left foreleg and pawed the ground. "If you mean harm, stop where you are!" He tossed his head, his short mane flopping between his long prong-like horns. "State your name newcomer." His stood, hind quarters flexed, ready to fight if the need arose.

((She never called out or made any sound other than maybe the sound of her hooves... but whatever, I'll work with it and assume that was just a mistake and that you were not power playing...))
She took a few steps back and pinned her ears, "I am Miasma, and while I do not mean any harm, it is probably best if you do keep your distance... There are not many that can withstand the poison I emit..."

( Haha no, i totally didn't mean to power play! My bad! I was thinking she made a noise for some reason. =p Sorry!)
Artemis stood still, looking over the other. His ears shifted curiously. "Poison?" His tail twitched back and forth, brushing against his haunches. "I have never heard of another being releasing a poison before." He lowered his head. If he were to push the newcomer away, he could end up alone, which doesn't fare well for many of his kind. "Tell me Miasma.. This poison you talk about... It will kill me? I am in need of company, and you're the only other being I have come across so far."

((No worries, it happens ^^; ))
She dipped her head, her pink forelock hiding her closed eyes as a small cloud of the miasma for which she was named drifted passed them, and her voice held clear bitterness, "Of course you haven't... I'm a freak..." However, she lifted her head, and the faint glow of her now open green eyes could be seen through her long forelock, "It has killed many... The longest anyone has been able to survive around me was four years, and she was a unicorn... ...That is to say, yes, my poison will likely kill you... how long it will take, I cannot say... Normal horses and other animals die almost immediately, unfortunately... but if you are a magical being, as your horns suggest you might be, you may have a chance... To risk it is your choice, however, so I will not approach."

((I'll be using an old character of mine she's new to this site, tough... here is her bio: allequineroleplay.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=bios&thread=124 )) A pair of pale eyes scanned the horizon... A mare stood on top of a cliff... she looked young but her eyes where glazed over and completly white, her pupil barely visible, her dusty mane blowing in the wind like dry grass. The wind carried the scent of other horses to her, she stopped and lifted her head to find it She turned her head to where the scent was coming from... her poor eyesight couldn't make out the shapes below her, she neighed loudly. "Who is there?" her nostrills flared, her ears pointed forwards. Something just didn't seem right about those strangers...

Miasma did not answer the call she heard from high up behind them. She did not want the accidental death of a horse trotting over to meet with whoever replied, on her hooves. Instead, she pranced lightly in place, ready to run at a moment's notice, should she see the need, regardless of whether or not the stallion in front of her wanted to try his luck.

Artemis stood, listening to the mare. "Well, i suppose it depends on your idea of magical." He perked his ears forward, noticing the mare's coloration and lightly glowing eyes. "I'm what is known as a Gemse.. At least, that's what others of my kind identify as." He lifted his hind leg, showing the long pearly white feathering. "Somewhere along the lines a horse got entangled with a deer-like creature called a Gemsbok. The mare was cursed with carrying a half-blood creature.. Half gemsbok, half horse. Many, many seasons later, many others of my kind exist. We don't have special powers, per say.. But we are certainly not your typical animal." He noticed the mare's actions, how she seemed to be afraid to affect another. "And you aren't a freak... After all, I have two horns on my head. If it makes a difference, I think you're beautiful." The normally brash stallion's eyes softened a little bit. "I'm willing to risk my own life to prove it." He twitched his tail hesitantly, then, walked to the mare, into her cloud of poison. He extended his muzzle to attempt to nuzzle her. "It may not kill me immediately you said... So I think I'll take my chances." As he stood there, he noticed the scent of another. He continued to hold his muzzle out to Miasma, but keeping alert incase the other should approach.

"But there are other like you; I am the only--" She stopped speaking when he came near, and her ears fell back and her front hooves left the ground by a few inches. Goodness, he was bold, for his description made it seem that there was in fact no magic protecting his mortality, and she really did not want to cause him any harm. Oh, but contact with another... it had been two years since anyone had been been able to be close to her for more than a few minutes. Two lonely years of wandering in solitude... but surely this seemingly kind stallion would not last long being so close to her. The thought made her heart ache, and she took a few steps back, "I-I... did not think you actually would risk it..." Wait... Did he say he thinks I'm beautiful...? No. Surely I misheard him. "...I really don't want to harm you..."

Artemis laid his ears back gently, and stepped forward to the mare again, closing the distance between them. "I've lived and been through many things. If you believe I'm going to let another creature live alone when I could have changed that, you're wrong." Inside, his heart was racing. Being near the mare could potentially end his life. But then again, if he didn't earn her trust and companionship, he would die anyways alone. With that thought, he lurched his head forward, touching his muzzle to hers.

Nervously, she blew a breath of air out her nose in a light snort at his touch, but she didn't back up, seeing as he would probably follow again, "I-I've... been alone for years... I'm used to it..." Lies. It wasn't something she could ever fully get used to; a solitary horse is a lonely horse at best, but she was cursed with a lethal biology, and until now, she had thought she was resigned to her fate of being alone...

Artemis backed off some, knowing the mare was distressed somewhat by his risk. "Honestly, Im willing to be your friend and companion if you allow yourself to relax. The risk is my burden to bear. Should I fall dead from your poison, that will be my choice." He then snorted, wondering if the other he had smelt would ever approach. Looking back to Miasma, "With species of my kind, we do not fare well being alone. Without the companionship of another, we fall ill and will eventually die. You can imagine my relief when I found you." He shook his head, his horns piercing the air side-to-side. "At my age I should be in a herd, mating with others of my kind.. Raising foals of my own. But your company will suit me as well as any mare of my own kind." He smiled a little. This kindness was not like his personality. But meeting a horse with such experience being alone made him compassionate.

White Eye climbed down a little further but kept her distance, no one had answered her call but she was certain someone was there. She could hear voices but couldn't make out what they where saying.
It could be dangerous, it would be best to keep walking... but... well it was worth a look, she had been traveling alone for weeks and she could use some company before continuing her journey.
The dusty mare made up her mind and climed down the hill but kept her distance. She could see two figures getting closer to each other but she could hardly distinguish anything more than silouettes. They definetly looked like horses, one of them had horns, the other one looked fuzzy... as if surounded by fog.
Ghosts, maybe? the air around her had a smell she couldn't identify... she saw the horned creature approach the ghostly one and decided to wait before calling again.

"I would hate to see you die because of me... As much as friend would be nice, I--" She stopped and thought for a moment, "Well... perhaps it is possible to share each other's company... I mean... as long as you don't expose yourself to my poison too much, you should be fine... Right...?" Her ear flicked at the sound of approaching hoofbeats, and they flattened again, "The other... horse I think it is, is coming..."
